Bartlomeu Diaz was a Portuguese explorer who was born in 1450, that is what people think but we are not sure. He was killed  at sea on May 29, 1500 when a storm hit his ship. he was around 50 when he died.

He is most known for his discovery of finding a sailing route around Africa in about 1488. He named the tip of Africa "The Cape Of Good Hope." He only sailed about half way around Africa because he thought Africa was much smaller than it was and he was running  low on food so his crew made him go back.

Barthlomeu was married and had two children. His religion was Roman Catholic. After he Passed away his grandson was a Portugeese colonilizer in Africa in the 16th century.

If you are wondering why he did all of this, I have an answer for you. The reason why did it is he wanted to search for an African king and he also wanted to trade with Asia. He did this in the year of 1487 or 1488 (people are not sure) as you already know. The bottom tip of Africa is named "The Cape Of Good Hope."  He named it this because he belived that there was hope that somone would would follow his footsteps and go on from there.
